Hidden spaces

Virtual Gallery and Exhibition Trail

Let us take you on a tour around Esholt, to spaces normally hidden from public view.

There are four locations on the Hidden Spaces Exhibition Trail - The Potting Shed, The Conservatory, The Cellar and The Attic. Each location has been chosen due to the nature in which it has been hidden from public access for many years. This exhibition now invites you into these fascinating spaces, providing a glimpse into the depths of Esholt Hall and offering an artistic interpretation in response to the heritage held within its walls.

The Hidden Spaces Virtual Gallery consists of twenty individually titled composite photographic giclee prints by Yvonne Roberts plus the Shadow Portraits Series: a series of four additional composite prints produced through a collaboration between Yvonne Roberts and Peter Forrest. The Shadow Portraits are intended to breathe life into the spaces once again, with a hint towards both past lives and future renovations.

The Hidden Spaces Virtual Gallery is now LIVE and the Exhibition Trail will take place at Esholt Hall in mid 2022. The pieces you see here in the Virtual gallery will be printed as giclée prints and displayed as a trail throughout the grounds of Esholt Hall, along with three additional bodies of work produced throughout the first year of the Effluent to Affluent Programme. The Exhibition Trail will offer an a unique opportunity to take in the current surroundings and developments of the site, as well as delve into the past through the eclectic display of artwork.

Esholt is a name known by many but a site viewed by few.

The village hosts the Emmerdale family. The site is the flagship of Yorkshire Water. It sits on the boundary of Bradford and Leeds. It is passed daily by commuters of road, rail, and air. It straddles the River Aire and Leeds and Liverpool Canal, being viewed by the fewer but more regular users of these water corridors.

Esholt Hall is hidden, but in plain view.

It is the ancestral home of its founder, Lord Calverley. What secrets does it hold within its walls and grounds? Playing host to conferences and the training of staff and partners. Who has looked beyond the Hall’s walls?

Hidden Spaces uncovers the secrets and memories of previous custodians.
