“FIVE RISING”: Funded by the Digital Film Archive Fund, and produced by Paul Slater and Yvonne Roberts of Big Voice Media. Five Rising takes archive footage of the Leeds Liverpool Canal as a starting point before fusing it with contemporary shots and a fresh soundtrack
Inspiration
Leeds City Region still has the extensive canal and navigable waterways network that enabled it to become a cradle for innovation at the heart of the Industrial Revolution. This network (the Leeds & Liverpool Canal, the Aire & Calder Navigation and the Calder & Hebble Navigaton) links many of the communities that sprang from that Revolution
Stimulus
Many of those communities are now suffering from high levels of disadvantage, with sense of identity and pride in place crumbling away, but viewing the City from a boat can give them a different perspective of both place and identity, igniting a quest to learn and achieve.
Catalyst For Change
95% of the social and economic capacity of this waterways network is currently under-used: it is a largely unrealised asset for both individuals and agencies who are seeking alternatives to traditional methods of engagement and empowerment.
